Kaylei Thomas (DE) High School Recipient - Impactful

I’ve always believed that life is about more than just going through the motions, it’s about creating something meaningful. My journey hasn’t been without challenges. Being diagnosed with epilepsy at fifteen was difficult, but instead of letting it define me, I let it deepen my sense of purpose. It made me want to live a life that matters - not just for me, but for others too. That’s what drives me to make my future flavorful and, above all, impactful.

To me, a flavorful future is one filled with joy, service, and learning - where every experience adds depth to who I am becoming. I’ve led in the classroom, on the volleyball court, and through community service because I want to be more than just present - I want to make a difference. Whether it’s serving as president of the National Honor Society, mentoring students as a Governor’s Fellow, or teaching Sunday school, I’ve learned that true leadership is about lifting others up and helping them see their own potential.

But more than anything, I want to be impactful. That’s why I’m passionate about becoming a genetic engineer. I want to help uncover solutions for conditions that affect real people everyday people like me. I want my story, my studies, and my career to bring healing, hope, and possibility to others. Because if I can take what I’ve been through and use it to help someone else, then every challenge will have been worth it.

Being impactful isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being present, purposeful, and willing to serve. That’s the kind of future I’m chasing. One where I leave behind more than accomplishments, I leave behind a legacy of compassion, courage, and change.
